I had a great deal of fun with this series.  Much of it is done tongue in cheek.  The sexual innuendoes of mushrooms and navel oranges were deliberate. The names of the canned and wrapped fruits and vegetables were too good to be true.  Imagine my joy when I found a label that said “Thoroughly Modern Mushrooms”.  The act of reflection was a constant theme in this series. What is real, what is not? That applies to the vegetables, fruit, and their reflections.  It probably applied to me too because I was leaving art school to face an uncertain future.
I’ve lost track of many of these paintings as most are in private collections. I still smile when I see one. They are like old, bold friends. In the end they were my talisman, sending me forward boldly into life.
